Polyrattan furniture is available in many variants and in different colors

Often a few carefully selected details are enough to help prevent autumnal depression. The furnishing consultant Uwe Linke is an expert in living psychology and gives tips on what to do about it in your own four walls to people who suffer from a low mood in the cold season.

Festive lighting instead of candlelight

Darkness strikes the mind. That is why the rooms in which one spends long periods of time should be brightly lit. There are even special lamps that mimic daylight. This very bright imitation summer light can help to prevent low moods or winter depression. At least 30 minutes a day, people at risk should expose themselves to such light during the dark months, advises Linke. But it is also important to be in daylight for about as long each day.

Order promotes well-being

If there’s a lot of stuff lying around in an apartment, it can be annoying and affect the mood – but it doesn’t have to look perfect either. "An apartment can also exude order without being perfectly tidy"says the interior design advisor. It is important that what is lying around follows a concept. "Taking up existing lines in space, it’s okay to collect piles of magazines or books on the floor." That brings calm to the room.

Plants have a positive effect

Plants also ensure a sunny disposition, because plants generally have a positive effect on people. "They bring green and summer into the apartment"says Linke. For many people it is great to see something flourish. You feel needed and the work is manageable.

Sport in the fresh air puts you in a good mood

To lighten the mood, even small things go a long way. Sport puts you in a good mood. Because during exercise, the body releases happiness hormones. But exercise, like jogging, is also good for self-confidence. Even those who do not enjoy doing sports can lighten their spirits by taking a walk. You fill up with oxygen, light and new energy.

Carbohydrates brighten the mood

A certain type of diet also lifts the mood. Because high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, pasta and bread increase the body’s production of the mood enhancer serotonin. Fruit also has this effect. In addition to sugar, it also provides many important vitamins that make you fit for winter.

Protection from prying eyes

At home you want to be comfortable and accordingly feel unobserved. The winter garden is an excellent place for this. Likewise, to have breakfast or spend cozy evenings with the family. Roller shutters for the winter garden offer excellent protection from prying eyes. When choosing, you should consider the construction of your winter garden so that the harmonious ambience is not impaired. That is not too difficult because roller shutters for the winter garden are available in all conceivable shapes and colors.

Extremely attractive as interior decoration

You can install your roller shutters for the winter garden both inside and outside. Inside they are protected from the weather, which benefits their durability. Inside, however, roller shutters for the winter garden not only serve as protection. They impress impressively as an extremely attractive and decorative addition to your winter garden and the rest of the interior. In addition, the roller shutters for the interior are a little cheaper.

Roller shutters for shading and weather protection

Roller shutters for the winter garden, which are installed from the outside, are reliable weather protection and ensure that the windows remain clean and, above all, undamaged even in poor weather conditions. Ideally, the colors of the roller shutter boxes match the look of the house, so that style and harmony are also visible from the outside. The externally mounted roller shutters for the winter garden naturally also protect against the effects of heat and sunlight in summer. Aluminum shutters are a very suitable shading element.

How you set up your conservatory and what kind of furniture it includes depends on how it is to be used. A winter garden ensures a green and lively piece of nature all year round – even when it is bitterly cold and snowing outside.

Set up a conservatory with furniture?

Which furniture you want to set up your winter garden with or whether it can even do without pieces of furniture should, if possible, be decided before building the winter garden. A winter garden is rarely used as a second living room for the entire winter, as the heating costs are very important.

If the winter garden is only rarely used, it may not be necessary to buy seating furniture if only one or two chairs are brought into the winter garden when necessary. Especially if the green oasis has a rather small footprint and you are setting up the winter garden, it is often easier if furniture is not included in the planning.

An additional room

If you set up your conservatory to use it as additional living space, you need suitable furniture. Typical furniture for winter gardens is characterized by the fact that it brings a high degree of comfort. Polyrattan is a great material for suitable winter garden furniture. It looks confusingly similar to real rattan, but has much better product properties. The plastic version of the rattan is UV-light-resistant, does not require any special care and is almost indestructible.

Polyrattan furniture is available in many variants and in different colors. They also have the advantage over wooden furniture that they can be used in the open-air garden in fine weather. Due to the good product properties, they are even immune to rain and other climatic influences. Regardless of the material, care should be taken when buying furniture that the individual pieces find sufficient space in the winter garden and do not take up too much space.

The winter garden control ensures that the temperature is tolerable when the sun is high: The automatic control is based on the outside temperature and ensures that the indoor climate in your green oasis always remains pleasant.

New systems provide a remedy

Automatic control is particularly recommended for people who rely on the use of their winter garden in warm temperatures and a pleasant indoor climate. Due to the advancing technology, the conservatory control acts intelligently and relieves the owners of all worries: awnings are extended or retracted by the automatic control depending on the weather conditions. In the event of high winds or heavy rain, they are pulled back for protection. As soon as the solar radiation increases again, the protective elements are reactivated before it can get too hot in the winter garden.

A heat pump ensures that the temperature does not drop too much during the cold season, even at night. In summer, on the other hand, it can switch to cooling and balance the room climate. Heating can also be operated via the winter garden control, as can the windows, which have to be opened and closed for ventilation purposes and for heat compensation. The automatic control ensures that the sun’s rays contribute to heat recovery in winter: The protective screens are then not extended until a comfortable room climate has been achieved.

Operation is often particularly easy

Since the manufacturers are now well informed about customer requirements, the operation of the conservatory controls is usually simple. Individual settings can be easily made using a preset menu. In addition, all manufacturers supply sophisticated operating instructions – this allows you to make the correct settings step by step. The devices, which are based on highly developed computer technology, are generally backed up, which can be easily uploaded after a power failure.

If you want to add a green oasis to your house, you can add a winter garden. This is possible at any time, even if the glass garden no longer fits into the financial planning when the house was actually built.

Planning only with building permit

If you want to grow a conservatory, care should be taken in planning so that it ultimately meets your expectations. The planning of the building should definitely start with the obtaining of the building permit. Failure to obtain permission, intentionally or unintentionally, could result in the demolition of the conservatory.

Whether you actually need a building permit for the planned winter garden depends on the size and construction of the planned glass garden. The obligation to obtain binding information on whether or not a building permit is required also applies in particular to existing buildings that are only to be expanded to include an extension conservatory.

Add a winter garden and gain space

An important factor in why homeowners add a conservatory afterwards is the simple fact that they lack a space in which to spend the cooler days in the country. Of course, there is usually enough space on a property to enjoy beautiful days in the garden, but as soon as the bad weather starts and it becomes uncomfortable in the open air, the winter garden comes into play. Even plants that are not hardy can find their place in the winter garden during the cold season.

A winter garden can be added to the house quickly: A sloping ceiling construction, leaning against the roof, proves to be cost-saving. The installation of fixed shelves is particularly worthwhile if a large number of plants are to overwinter in it. The plants can be better sheltered and the height of the room can be used particularly effectively.

Somehow nothing is really fun anymore, you would rather be alone and are constantly tired: Is that still a bad mood or is it already a depression? Professor Ulrich Hegerl, CEO of the German Depression Aid Foundation, explains in an interview which warning signs must be taken seriously – and what is important in an acute case.

Recognize warning signs and act

Thousands of Germans suffer from depression. But many of those affected do not even realize the danger of the disease at first. And relatives often find it difficult to correctly interpret the warning signs in family members. In acute depression, however, it is important to act, as there may be an increased risk of suicide.

How do you recognize depression?

"Several signs of illness come together. Not only is the mood depressed, which happens often in life, but actually the whole structure of life has changed. You can no longer be happy about anything, even positive things do not reach you. You have great difficulty getting small things done because of a constant feeling of exhaustion. One cannot sleep at night, lies in bed brooding. This is a situation that, firstly, is unbearable, and secondly, I think I’ll never get out of it. That means: hopelessness is also part of it. This is a state of extreme suffering."

How can relatives notice when someone around them is depressed?

"When relatives notice that the partner is withdrawing, no longer laughing, maybe even unable to cry – in severe depression the tears dry up. Then it is very, very important that the relatives motivate those affected to get help. It is not easy for the sick person to recognize that it is depression. Because he then thinks, for example, that this is the excessive demands at work or the conflict in the family."

Can you prevent depression?

"In any case, it is more difficult than you might imagine. If you reduce stress, you can’t always prevent it if you have a disposition. This also often happens when you go on vacation or when you retire, when you don’t actually have any manifest stress. And people who work in high-performance areas don’t get depressed more often than people who don’t. People who work part-time are apparently more likely to become depressed than people who work full-time, according to statistics."

How can the disease be treated?

"We have good treatment options. One is antidepressants, which are not addicting, which many people believe, and which do not change personality either. However, they don’t work immediately. You have to wait about two weeks until you notice the positive effects. The other is psychotherapy. In particular, the method of cognitive behavioral therapy has sufficiently proven its effectiveness in good studies.
